GreenDex was created with the primary goal of educating and empowering consumers to make informed decisions at checkout.
Our mission is to provide transparency around corporate practices so that individuals can align their purchases with their values.
Looking ahead, we hope GreenDex will be widely adopted, creating meaningful pressure so companies act responsibly we can discourage them from profiting through harmful or unethical behavior.
GreenDex utilizes an open-source platform called WikiRate to compile over 20 different metrics in order to calculate grades.
To view these grades, click on any company → their report card → and the category of interest. From there, you can see all individually listed metrics.
It's our goal to be as transparent and up front with our users as possible so we can maintain trust and provide high-quality information.
The grading system is a work in progress, as are companies themselves. We’re still collecting data for many companies—pay attention to the confidence scores companies receive in order to user our app effectively.
A “good” grade may vary from industry to industry, and industry-tailored grading is a target GreenDex hopes to achieve in the near future.
If we had to make a general recommendation, we’d say that companies in the B or A range are probably doing pretty well. Regardless though—between two comparable companies, higher is better!
It’s GreenDex’s goal to build a platform that helps people.
Putting ourselves in the shoes of a new user, we ask ourselves: what would make us trust something new?
We landed on community and accountability. That’s why any user has the power to report false or misleading data, suggest improvements to the accuracy, weighting, or methodologies behind grading, and submit new data to WikiRate.
The beauty behind GreenDex lies in the community we build together. We recognize that without trust, there’s less opportunity for that community to grow and thrive.
In short, the application can be used casually or actively—and if you’d like to contribute, reach out to us and share your ideas!
Every company has a share bar located beneath its name and grade.
Just press copy paste and post anywhere! Hyper-links can be shared in stories or with friends and family to help spread awareness.
We recommend addressing issues publicly and improving your grade over time.
We are open to working with companies publicly giving helpful guidance in order to reach desired targets until they feel comfortable publicly sharing their grade.
If you own or represent a business and want your company’s data off of GreenDex, contact us. The name of your company will still appear on the platform, but we’ll make sure that its grade and other data will be removed.
"N" is GreenDex's shorthand for "Not Graded."
This may indicate that there isn’t enough available data or information to assign a grade,
or that the company has a low GreenDex confidence score — meaning we’re not confident enough in the accuracy of the grade and prefer not to risk misinforming the public.
The profile page contains specific info you’ve added about your consumption practices.
You can mark companies as “liked,” “disliked,” or “watched,”.
By engaging with these tools, you help us understand your interests—allowing us to notify you when new information becomes available about those companies.
As of right now, nothing on your profile (including your profile itself) is public. This might be subject to change in the future.
The gold banners represent companies that GreenDex has partnered with!
These are companies we've approved to participate in the GreenDex advertising program, allowing them to promote their business to a values-driven audience.
To maintain partner status, companies must uphold a grade of B or higher and actively collaborate with us to report important information our users may want to know.
On the search page, you'll find a filter icon in the top-left corner.
Clicking it will open a sidebar with options to customize the search results displayed on the page.
You can filter by high E, S, and G grades, as well as hide companies marked with an "N" for limited or unavailable information.
